The hoard of sketches was found in Milan’s Sforzesco castle.

Maurizio Bernardelli Curuz and Adriana Conconi Fedrigolli, the art historians behind the discovery, cite similarities between finished Caravaggio works and the sketches as evidence that they were his. Others are not so sure: the sketches were found among the archives of Caravaggio’s teacher Simone Peterzano. They could have belonged to any of Peterzano’s many students. Art expert Claudio Strinati is skeptical of the find, and calls the sketches “exercises of no artistic importance.”
