A few amateur astronomers managed to capture this event on camera.

The small, bright orb in the lower right corner of the galaxy is a dying star. With all its fuel used up, the star went out in style, exploding into a blazing inferno bright enough to be seen with a 12-inch telescope. Better images from more high-tech telescopes are expected to follow, so stay tuned.
